Jaguars 2022 OTAs: Day 7 of Camp

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars held Day 7 of the 2022 Organized Team Activities on Monday.

The team is scheduled to hold three more such unpadded, contactless practices at TIAA Bank Field this week, followed by a three-day mandatory mini-camp next week. The mini camp will conclude Phase 3 of the offseason program, with teams able to hold 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 practices.

Here are Monday’s “campservations” from three members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Ashlyn Sullivan:

Jaguar’s OTA’s Day 7 was notable for all the wrong reasons, with sophomore defensive end/linebacker Jordan Smith and backup quarterback C.J. Beathard who left training after sustaining injuries. Smith appeared to suffer a knee injury halfway through practice. Beathard, a sixth-year veteran, sustained an injury during what became the final practice stretch and left the field on a cart. Those games aside, the practice — held under a gray sky with the occasional rain — had a similar feel to the other two open OTA drills in recent weeks, with defensive front quarterback Trevor Lawrence pressuring — pressure that he says. Lawrence is expected given the non-contact, unpadded nature of the off-season practice. Veteran cornerback Shaq Griffin intercepted Lawrence late in practice, a play Lawrence pitched to shortly after saying it would have been a looting if the play had been live. Lawrence also seemed to continue to develop good chemistry with veteran tight end Evan Engram on Monday, with the two connecting multiple times during practice – including a nice touchdown in traffic in the red zone session late in practice.

“He runs like a receiver,” Lawrence said. “That match-up alone will be great for us. Safety, linebacker… whoever has to cover him, it’s going to be tough.”

At first glance, it looked like the defense held its own in team practice Monday. Still, this offense will be fun to watch once everything is under control. The Christian Kirk and Wide Receiver Engram matchup options – the ability for them and others to line up in different spots in the formation – will come in handy. It’s up to the quarterback to pull off those matchups and keep the offense moving. This may interest you : Dallas Cowboys Host Free Practices at The Star in Frisco. Unfortunately, we saw a few players injured on Monday; Smith was assisted off the field midway through practice, and Beathard was carried off during goal-line drills towards the end of practice. Pederson wound up training after the Beathard injury. The team is not expected to make any further official statements about the status of either player.

Unfortunately, injuries were the biggest highlight of Monday’s OTA – both Smith and Beathard suffered what appeared to be knee injuries. You hate to see that this time of year, especially when there’s no contact and no pads; it’s just the unfortunate part of this game. The defense had another great day. See the article : Introducing the 2017 ROAR of the Jaguars.. I’ve written that in every Campservation over the past few weeks, but it shows how much improved this front seven has been. Defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris is having a fantastic off season; his pressure is noticeable with every game. Lawrence has noticed that too, with Robertson-Harris in his face multiple plays.

“He’s had a great off-season,” Lawrence said of Robertson-Harris. “He’s huge and he looks really good. I thought he was starting to pick it up a lot. Towards the end of the year (last season) I thought he started playing well. He’s been playing really well this whole spring .” While I’m hesitant to continue applauding the defense without pads, there’s something to be said for how fast the unit has played during OTAs.
