Proviso East High School is known for its rich basketball program, but there’s another sport that ranks high at the Maywood school – track and field.

Twenty Proviso East cheerleaders participated in the University of Cheer Association (UCA) camp at Illinois State University July 9 through July 12 and three achieved coveted All-American status, East Cheerleading said. Coach Laura “Cee Cee” Burrell-Mobley.

The three American entertainers – Aniyah Redmond, 16, Kennedi James, 15, and Anaiyah Jones, 15 – all won trips to Hawaii or London. Burrell-Mobley said she is encouraging them to go to Hawaii.

The trip is scheduled from December 4 to December 9, he said. The teacher said that the program has the opportunity to take the team, if the school and their parents allow them to make the trip. He said he hopes to take at least four girls.

“For any cheerleader to bring [all-American] 400 girls to a camp is a big deal,” Burrell-Mobley said. “We got three up. I am very proud.”

According to him, it was an effort of the whole village to take 20 girls to the UCA camp. The strength of the fundraiser allowed him to pay the bill for the fans who needed financial help to be able to hold the camp.

“The community came behind us and really pushed us to send the girls,” said the teacher. “When I asked for donations, people came up and said, ‘Yes, we want to help these girls.’ It was amazing.”

Burrell-Mobley said her program is no stranger to success at recreational camps. He has taken his entertainers to rallies for at least 17 years. This year, he said, he wants the community to know exactly what the camp does for girls.

“It’s not as scary and scary as we go,” he said. “We have to bring this back and show them what we’re doing.”

Jones, who attends Proviso Math and Science Academy, said this is the second time he has earned All-American status. According to him, a lot of work goes into establishing dignity.

“You have to be committed to doing what you want to do and have a lot of spirit, all the time,” Jones said. “Well, once you lay down again that’s when you have time to fall, but we know the next day no matter how tired, no matter how pain, you have to push to be able to go far.”

James and Redmond, his fellow Americans, echoed this sentiment.

“The camp is a lot of fun, but it’s a lot of work,” James said. “We learned a lot of new fun and we had to remember.”

When asked what it means to be an All-American, Redmond expressed confidence.

“It means that I work hard and do a lot of work in perfecting my performance and I know that I have the ability to be all-American,” he said.
