Officer: Linder retires

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars’ most dominant player has called it quits.

Brandon Linder, the Jaguars’ starting center since 2014, officially announced his retirement Monday morning. The team announced the retirement on Monday.

Linder was a team captain for the past five seasons.

In a statement, Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke congratulated Linder and his family on a “fantastic NFL career.”

“Brandon spent his entire career here in Jacksonville and earned the respect of his teammates, fans and everyone in the Jaguars organization,” Baalke said. “He was the first player in franchise history to earn the distinction of a gold jersey patch for being captain five times.

“Off the field, he proudly represented the team as a community ambassador. For all he has contributed on and off the field, we thank him and wish him and his family the best in retirement.”

Linder, a third-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2014 NFL Draft, started 88 games over eight seasons with the Jaguars, starting every game of his career. He played in nine games over the past two seasons, starting 88 of a possible 129 games.

“To the City of Jacksonville: Eight years ago, you treated me like a member of the family and continued to support me unconditionally,” Linder said in a statement. “I’ve grown to love this city, where I’ve put down roots with my family, made lifelong friends, and cultivated my passion for the outdoors. After much reflection, I’ve come to realize that the man I want to be today doesn’t match up. I have to become him to play this game. I have decided at this time to close this chapter in my life and retire from the NFL.

“I started playing football at the age of seven and I have always played with all my heart for the chance to win. I have spent most of my life sacrificing my body, mind and time to fulfill my dreams. I am grateful for the opportunities that have been presented to me and for all the doors that have opened for me because of football. Life Lessons I have learned valuable things and had many unforgettable experiences that I will cherish forever. I am grateful to my teammates, coaches, family and friends for helping me grow in the sport and helping me become a master of my craft.

“I want to thank my teammates for giving their all to the sport. The experiences we’ve had together is what makes the brotherhood we’ve created so special. I’m going to miss that the most. I’m grateful to have it. I’m able to fulfill my lifelong goal of retiring from Jaguar. Jacksonville will be my home.

“I’m excited to chase new dreams and look forward to all the great things to come in the future.”
