A local student competes in the state 4H competition

Mary Joy Moosman recently represented Troup County 4-H in Atlanta at the 4-H State Congress. Moosman, a student at Troup County High School, was one of more than 200 4-H’ers from across the state to compete in this annual competition.

After winning first place in her district last spring, Mary Joy and five other high school students in her category advanced to state.

Mary Joy, a longtime competitive cheerleader, presented her project “The Elements and Kinesiology of Cheerleading” to a panel of judges. He delivered an 11-minute speech with accompanying visual aids and demonstrations. She was also judged on the content of her portfolio, which consisted of work for animation projects, leadership activities and community service.

Since 1942, the State Congress has been the premier public speaking competition and recognition event for Georgia’s 4-hour high school students.

This four-day event hosts various contests, recognizes 4-H scholarship recipients and honors state 4-H winners in a variety of projects and contests.

Coordinated by the Georgia 4-H Cooperative Extension Program of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the Congress is financially supported by donors and partners of the Georgia 4-H Foundation.
