The Edgewater Football Facebook page posted a notification saying the game was canceled due to a “Bishop Moore [High School] social media post” from earlier in the day.

Officials said the post was “inappropriate” and was made before youth and junior soccer games between the teams.

The schools did not specify what the social media post was about.

“You’re kind of confused about this because these are two schools in the same area and maybe they’re friends – maybe the students are friends,” parent Katy Ann White said.

White has a 14-year-old son who is on the Edgewater youth football team. He was leaving work Thursday evening and was happy to watch his son play, until he received a voice message from the principal of Edgewater.

A statement from principal Heather Kreider said in part: “Bishop Moore has made the decision to cancel youth and junior varsity football.

Bishop Moore said in a Facebook post that school officials and local law enforcement are looking into the social media post.

“It’s the first game of the season and I really wanted to see my son play so it was disappointing,” White said. “As parents, as teachers and coaches we have to take everything seriously these days.”

One team was so sad that they could not cheer the players on the football field.

“We were devastated that the last game for our varsity girls was canceled due to weather and this game was canceled,” Edgewater senior Da’Miyah Jones said. “It was like going back in time.”

“We were really excited about it because this was going to be our first game as freshmen,” Edgewater assistant coach Sapphire Marosek said. “Our coach gave us the news as soon as we finished cheering, so we were all disappointed because everyone was very surprised because we’ve been waiting for this for a while.”

“Hopefully the next game — nothing can erase this one,” Edgewater senior Ciara Cerrud said.

The two high schools said Friday’s varsity football game between their teams will still go ahead as planned.
