The Nebraska team marches with players who entertained spectators at Trinity College and Dublin Castle today before Saturday’s College Football Classic game.
His game will be between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Northwestern Wildcats at the Aviva Stadium – a first in Ireland for the two teams.
Bringing American glory to Dublin were more than 70 students from the University of Nebraska, making up the Cheer Squad, the Cornhusker Marching Band, and the Scarlets Dance Team – along with their mascot Herbie Husker.
The square in front of Trinity was filled with a sea of red and white as chanters flew in the air and the marching band readied their instruments.
As we arrived this morning, today marked the first time in Ireland for many Nebraskans, telling Independent.ie that many of their fans have traveled with them on the plane.
After the opening ceremony, dancers, dancers, and musicians hopped on a bus and headed to Dublin Castle to re-populate their neighborhood with bombs, brass instruments, and bright red uniforms.
“Our team has done a really good job this year of working hard at all our games, getting the crowd involved and working on different angles and different weather conditions. We are very happy and proud of our fight songs, and we are happy to share that with all of you guys,” said Delaney Cutler, one of the Scarlets cheerleaders.
Altogether, the number of cheerleaders, singers and athletes at the University of Nebraska approaches 300 – but only a few were chosen to make the transatlantic trip and support their team.
“We are very happy to be here. I handpicked all my seniors, and a few juniors to come and show you our best work. We put in many hours of training; the band repeated. We’re going to put on a great show for you,” said Eryn Butzke, Spirit Squad Head Coach and former NFL Denver Broncos cheerleader.
Ms Butzke told Independent.ie that the current cheerleading squad had been training since the summer, with members disbanded when they graduated due to a three-year delay.
The game, which is being supported by Aer Lingus, was supposed to take place three years ago, but due to Covid 19, it was postponed until this Saturday.
“All the excitement that comes with American football. We have cheerleaders and a band from both teams, there will be a halftime show.
“Each team has 120 players here. This is going to be amazing, this is going to be something you don’t see at Irish festivals, so we encourage everyone to come out and bring friends and family. Just come along for a fun-filled day”, said Sabrina Egerton Director of Marketing and Communications at Corporate.ie.
“We’re really excited to be able to show Dublin what Cheer and Dance is all about in America. I know we all really enjoyed the Aer Lingus Football Classic. Go big red.”
