Eagles hire first male cheerleader in franchise history

Kyle Tanguay made history this week, becoming the first male cheerleader for the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday night. Tanguay found out he was selected by the Eagles at the end of cheerleader tryouts on Tuesday.

Tanguay wasn’t an Eagles fan at first. Being a native of Rochester, New Hampshire, he has never been on Boston sports teams here…but fell in love with the Eagles thanks to the 2017 Super Bowl championship team.

“After that season, I knew – this team took me as someone who didn’t really follow football and now I’m in love with the team,” Tanguay told 6abc in an interview. “There’s something to be said about that. Since then, I’ve been following them. I’ve watched every game this season. Just living in Philadelphia, being in Center City, you can’t be in the community and not being very. excited about sports.”

Tanguay was encouraged to try out for the Eagles’ cheerleading squad after her roommate had been an Eagles cheerleader for the past two years. She convinced the University of the Arts student to try out for the squad.

The only male cheerleader to try out for the Eagles, Tanguay will become the fourth male cheerleader in NFL history, joining Quinton Peron and Napolean Jinnies (Los Angeles Rams) Jesse Hernandez (New Orleans Saints).

“I think it’s very exciting to see this happening in the NFL,” Tanguay said (via 6abc). “It’s pretty incredible. We’ve all worked hard in training to earn our spots on these teams. I can speak for myself with the Eagles, if there are any guys who were thinking of trying out to make the Eagles Cheerleading team, I would encourage him,” Tanguay said. “Hearing my name called and breaking down that barrier was a big motivation for me.”
