Way has long been open with fans about her own journey with gender identity and presentation. During a 2014 Reddit AMA, he shared that traditional masculinity has always felt “like it wasn’t right for me.”
“I’ve always been extremely sensitive to those who struggle with gender identity, as I feel I’ve gone through it too, albeit on a smaller scale,” Way wrote at the time. “I have always identified quite a bit with the female gender, and at a certain point in MCR began to express this through my appearance and performance style.”
He pointed out that his musical inspirations and style icons also pushed gender boundaries: “Freddy Mercury, Bowie, Iggy, early glam, T-Rex.”
Former porn star Mickey Taylor says being asked to be on MCR merchandise was “bizarre and fever dreamy”.
Way also delighted fans when the band paid tribute to their large LGBTQ+ fandom by selling an MCR gay tramp shirt. And yes, they got permission from Mickey Taylor, the gay porn star with said lower back tattoo, to use his image for their official merchandise.
