PELHAM – The Birmingham Bulls hockey team is getting ready to start their season and tryouts are being held for the Birmingham Bulls cheerleading squad.
Tryouts will be held at the Bulls office in the Pelham Civic Complex on Wednesday, August 31 at 7:15 p.m.
It’s the sixth season for the Birmingham Bulls and things are changing for the cheerleading squad.
“The first season the girls were all teenage skaters from the Birmingham Figure Skating Club and we emphasized more skating skills,” said head coach Brittany Layton. “In seasons two and three, we set the minimum age to 18 and planned for the girls to interact more with the fans. In season four, we cut back to one or two girls on the ice due to COVID.
Layton said that type of more personal interaction is what the team is looking for this season.
“We actually liked the girls being more visible and interacting with the fans, so we decided to only keep one or two girls on the ice.” Layton said.
Layton said girls who want to try out need to be ready for anything.
“Bullgirls need to be adaptable and able to go with the flow. No two games are the same, so they need to be ready for any task and be able to do it with a friendly smile,” Layton said. “We’re looking for fun, energetic, outgoing ladies who love interacting with the fans.”
Layton said she is excited for the upcoming tryouts and expresses that the experience of being a Bulls girl is truly valuable.
“I’m so excited about the tryouts. I love hockey and I love working with the Bulls. The hockey season is very long, so we get to spend a lot of time together. We became a little family and I have lifelong friends with former Bulls girls,” she said.
Layton said the Bulls’ fan base is popular.
“The Bulls have a great following and the games are always fun,” Layton said. “At the same time, the girls have also developed their own fans in the last couple of years. So many little girls come to the games with their favorite girl and ask for a picture. It’s so nice to see how the girls have become role models for some of the younger fans.
