AMERICAN FORK – Emily Traveler is usually the one to fit in, but Friday night, the crowd cheered her on at the American Fork High School soccer game.

Traveler just returned to Utah after spending several months at a physical therapy clinic in Colorado. He was injured in an ATV accident while having fun with friends at Little Sahara Recreation Area in April. The 17-year-old broke his neck and initially lost movement in his arms and legs.

“I couldn’t feel anything, so there was no pain, but it was also a strange feeling, like a lot of emotions,” Traveler said.

The high school cheerleader is defying the odds and has now regained some movement in her hands and wrists.

Friday night, his fight was honored by his peers in a special way. The crowd went wild when Traveler entered the field through the tunnel escorted by the captain of the football team.

“It’s just exciting! It’s good to be back,” she said. “It just reminds me how much I’m loved and it’s a good reminder.”

His mother said the community cheering him on is making a difference in his recovery.

“We love this community. We have felt it since the night of the accident,” said Kari Traveler. “Being here tonight is a big thing for him. He loves the fall football game and I’m proud of him because I know he’d love to be in uniform.”

Traveler said her daughter’s physical improvement is related to what the girl learned as a student athlete.

“He just kept pushing,” he said. “Today, he’s moving himself up and down on his stomach, so that’s all, big stuff.”

Emily Traveler will be taking online classes this fall while continuing her daily physical therapy. He hopes to return to campus in person for his senior year.
