The Washington Commanders, despite their bright new name and uniforms, are one of the oldest teams in football. Founded in 1932, the team started out as the Boston Braves before moving to Washington and later taking on the nickname “Redskins”. Over time, the company has evolved as a whole and many fans across the country have found the team name offensive to Native Americans.
Now, the Washington football team is now called Commanders. Along with the new name, the franchise also introduced new kits and, in an unprecedented stroke of creativity, a cute new ‘W’ shaped logo. Who needs a super cool logo on the side of the helmet anyway? Well, the Ravens and the Buccaneers to name two.
But the new team name and logo aren’t the only step the team is taking to avoid offending the fans. In another move, the commanders have now eliminated their cheerleading squad. Ironically, this decision has offended a large number of people.
Petra Pope is the leader of the Commander’s new gender-neutral dance team. With a career spanning three decades with the NBA, Pope said this about the change,
Pope went on to praise the change saying:
The Commanders’ new all inclusive dance team is not what the fans want

But football fans are rooted in tradition and a movement has been initiated to get the commanders to reverse their decision. An online petition to restore the cheerleading squad has been signed by more than 34,000 people, and commanders are now under pressure to return to what, no doubt, they considered exploitation of women. On the same subject : What’s next now that Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders show has left CMT?. Or, more likely, they were afraid that others would see cheerleaders as such.
With commanders so closely scrutinized in recent years, it is clear that they are trying to stem any possible controversy in the future.
