Campsites: day 6

JACKSONVILLE – The 2022 Jaguars training camp continued Sunday.

It was the sixth day of the first training camp under head coach Doug Pederson, which featured a full-protector practice at Episcopal School Jacksonville’s Knight Sports Campus. Each day during camp, members of Jaguars Media (Senior Writer John Oehser, Senior Correspondent Brian Sexton, Senior Reporter/Editor J.P. Shadrick, and Reporter/Host Ashlyn Sullivan) will share an observation.

Here are Sunday’s “camp reservations”:

Travis Etienne Jr. has been one of the stars of camp, and that remains the case. That’s good news not only for the second-year running back, but also for the Jaguars’ offense and quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Etienne, the 25th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, missed his rookie regular season with a Lisfranc injury in preseason. While there were understandable concerns among observers about Etienne’s ability to return from injury, he looked strong throughout the offseason program and has routinely been a standout play most days of camp ’22. He had a long run down the middle early in practice Sunday, another in a series of runs in camp that have highlighted the speed and snap that the Jaguars hope will add a necessary big-play element to the offense. “It’s exciting to see him and where he’s come from, how he’s fought to get back on the football field,” coach Doug Pederson said Sunday. “It seems like he hasn’t lost his explosiveness, which is good. He’s a young player and he missed everything last year. It’s good to see.”

A day after catching everything in sight, the Jaguars’ receivers were sloppy and missed too many passes on Sunday. I thought we saw a standard set for Lawrence and his receivers on Saturday, but apparently not. Wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram on Sunday let catchable passes slip through their fingers. To be fair, both also made a couple of big catches on Sunday. But if the Jaguars are going to be better, they have to find a level of consistency, and there’s no reason why big-money, high-expectations players like Kirk and Engram should pass up passes. On the same subject : Why a California Central Coast city loves the Dallas Cowboys. Plus: I spent most of practice in an end zone behind the secondary and was impressed with safety Andre Cisco’s day. He’s a big guy who has great range and on Sunday he really moved to cut routes and discourage quarterbacks in the middle of the field. If it wasn’t for a knee injury in his final season at Syracuse, he likely would have been selected before Round 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft. He looked the part on day one in his underwear on Sunday: a guy who defies everything. which gets in the way and makes receivers/quarterbacks think twice with his presence.

The intensity ramped up on Sunday morning for the first day with full protections and the first line or front d-line drills of camp. All eyes were on No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker, who showed off his athleticism. Left tackle Cam Robinson had a perfect day at the drill and then blew kisses to an imaginary crowd. As a perennial Pro Bowl player and All-Pro at right guard, the way he prepares for a season and works is a great example not just for some young offensive linemen but for the entire team.

The day we were waiting for!! Yeah, full pads, but more offensive line versus defensive line. Pederson said in his news conference today that we learn a little more about this team when it’s on cushion. We learned that the offensive line can stand on its own. I’d say the offensive linemen were the overall winners in the one-on-one drills. Scherff dominated anyone he faced; no defensive lineman could move him. Robinson is playing with an obvious chip on his shoulder to show he’s a league-wide talent at left tackle. During a replay, Robinson slipped K’Lavon Chaisson and was blowing kisses to the media; it was amazing. Overall, it was an inconsistent day for the offense and Lawrence. In an 11-on-11 stretch, there were numerous misses and penalties on offense. However, the offense rallied in a big way during the final 11-on-11 period with Lawrence completing all of his passes and having plenty of time to complete his shots thanks to the offensive line.
