A former Melbourne Storm cheerleader has slammed claims dancers were ‘sexualised’ and ‘degraded’ at work.

Tegan Burns spoke about the opposition to female cheerleaders, who were dropped from the 2019 NRL squad, during an Instagram Q&A last week.

The successful dancer and former Beauty and the Geek contestant was asked by fans why Storm stopped hiring cheerleaders three years ago.

“In 2019, the Melbourne Storm decided to make the cheerleaders go in a new direction because they felt that being a cheerleader sexualized women,” she said.

The cheerleaders, after 21 years of entertaining fans on the field, were replaced by a mixed group of ‘hip-hop dancers’.

Burns took aim at the politics surrounding the cheerleaders, who performed complicated fan routines on the field in addition to dancing.

She disputed claims the women were ‘sexualised’ and instead spoke of how much fun they had entertaining the crowd.

‘For the record, we loved our jobs and didn’t feel sexualised,’ Burns wrote, sharing a photo of the Storm cheerleaders mid-performance.

Cheerleaders were also covered during dance routines, she added.

‘Breasts, arms, torso and everything. We wouldn’t do that job if we felt degraded as women,’ she said.

The Melbourne Storm were not the first NRL team to walk away from their fan base.

South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe replaced his club’s cheerleaders with drummers in 2007.

In 2017, the Canberra Raiders ditched their cheerleaders in favor of showcasing youth dance talent.

When the cheerleaders were phased out in 2019, the Melbourne Storm thanked their performers for entertaining fans for more than two decades since the club joined the league in 1998.

‘Our fresh daytime entertainment coincides with a new era for the club and we are excited to offer a home game experience that everyone can enjoy,’ the club said.

It was a surprise move by the club, which is the No.1 club among NRL fans for matchday experience.

The controversial move sparked mixed reactions from Storm fans on social media.

‘Thanks for asking the players what they think,’ wrote a disappointed supporter.

Another added: ‘My little princess just goes to see the cheerleaders. There’s no reason to take her to games now.’

But others embraced the new era for the club.

‘Cheerleaders were never suited to the culture of Melbourne and Melburnians raised on the AFL. I’d be more interested in watching street performers. Melburnians love their streets and you can often be treated to good street dancers walking down Swanston Street,’ one fan commented.

Another added: ‘Not a terrible idea. Anything to improve the atmosphere.’
