TAMPA — Eight teams from across the country came to the Tampa Convention Center from August 26-28 to compete in the second tournament of the US Wheelchair Soccer League of the 2022 season.
Despite a strong 3-0 start over the first two days of the tournament, the hosts Tampa Bay Buccaneers failed to reach the championship game. While the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t finish when they played for the title in Tampa two seasons ago, the Chiefs’ adaptive wheelchair roster takes care of the business. Kansas City earned a 14-6 championship win over the Dallas Cowboys, becoming their second tournament champion of the season after the Green Bay Packers win on August 14.
USAWFL is a program of Move United, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of parasports among youth and adults with physical disabilities. The adaptive wheelchair soccer league, playing its second year, has the support of the NFL and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, a nonprofit that supports military veterans.
Seven of the eight teams in last month’s tournament were based in NFL cities and received support from their local NFL franchises – Dallas, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and New Orleans Saints. Also participating are the Birmingham Hammers.
The Bucs organization helped show its local support during a kickoff dinner on the evening of August 26 with former defender Dexter Jackson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleading in attendance.
Tampa Bay opened the tournament with an 18-6 win over Chicago and followed Saturday’s victories over Birmingham (31-7) and Arizona (18-7). The Bucs fell to Kansas City in the semifinals Sunday morning and then had a rematch against Arizona for third place.
The Tampa Bay wheelchair football team has a roster of 19 players and is coached by Wayne Bozeman. It is sponsored by the Hillsborough County Adaptive Sports program, part of the Department of Parks and Recreation. In addition to the team’s on-field success since its founding two years ago, in June the team was awarded the 2022 Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation National Recreation and Social Justice Award.
The playing surface is oval, with a length of 135m to 185m and a width of 110m to 155m. The preferred senior oval size is 165m x 135m as this provides the greatest flexibility to meet all playing standards.
