Baker Mayfield is still quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. That could soon change. According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Carolina Panthers have the “inside track” to acquire Mayfield in a trade.
Carolina has long been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Mayfield. The Panthers are currently expected to start Sam Darnold later this year.
They are also likely to take a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft. Mayfield would be a clear upgrade over either option, at least at the start.
Will Mayfield be sporting Carolina Blue this upcoming season? It seems momentum for a Panthers-Browns trade is building.
There would be one significant problem with the Panthers acquiring Baker Mayfield in a trade.
Panthers wide receiver Robby Anderson has been very vocal he doesn’t want to be catching passes from Mayfield later this fall.
“Ah man, guess they’ll have to trade Robby Anderson to the #Browns then.”
“I know there is a ‘Mutual Disinterest’ between the 2 (at least a few weeks ago) but Baker is CLEARLY better than Darnold.. He should go there Kajdddd I would love to see what happens when he and Robby Anderson meet lol”
The Panthers’ interest in Baker Mayfield is also bad news for the 49ers, who still can’t find a trade partner for Jimmy Garoppolo.
“It would be bad news for the 49ers to try to find a suitor for Garoppolo. He’s staying, right?”
Why did the Browns let Baker Mayfield go?

The rookie could then sit behind Mayfield and Darnold while he learns the system before taking over in 2023.
