ST. GEORGE – It’s fun to say, it just rolls off the tongue.

“Raider great Jay Schroeder.”

The former NFL quarterback coaches and works in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was on the Dixie High School campus Friday night at Walt Brooks Stadium as part of Intermountain Healthcare’s Friday Night Showcase.

The Las Vegas Raiders and Intermountain Healthcare highlight and celebrate high school football games throughout the season. Friday night’s Region 10 matchup between Dixie and Pine View was the showcase game for Southern Utah this year.

“It’s good to be back in the old stomping grounds,” said Schroeder St. George News before the ceremonial coin toss between the Flyers and Panthers.

Schroeder was a third-round draft pick of Washington in 1984. He was traded to the Raiders and spent five years playing single seasons in Cincinnati and Arizona before retiring. He threw for over 20,000 yards in his pro career. He coached one season with Blaine Monkres at Dixie and also served one year as quarterbacks coach at Desert Hills in 2007.

He said Friday night was the first time in a couple of years he was back in St.

“We’re so close to St. George in Vegas,” Schroeder said. “It’s great to be here and be part of the community. I know a lot of people who want Raiders games and everything. I get calls and texts all the time.

St. George football fans will be hearing a lot more from Schroeder. He does color commentary for Utah Tech football games with Voice of the Trailblazers Rod Zundel.

“We’ve talked about doing this since I lived here a long time ago,” Schroeder said. “We were playing golf and I was like, ‘We need to do something together.'” He called me a few weeks ago and said, “We’re finally going to do it.”

Schroeder is excited to watch the Trailblazers grow as a Division I program.

“They just have to build,” he said. “Every year, just keep building to get better athletes. They’re in Division One right now, so they’ve got to get those guys. It’s fun to see them progress as the year goes on.

Zundel and Schroeder will air Utah Tech’s home game against Chadron State on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Listen to the game live on Fox Sports Southern Utah’s 99.5 FM and 95.3 FM St. George and 1400 in Cedar City.
