Considering how much time NFL cheerleaders spend on their teams and how valuable NFL franchises are, it’s hard to believe they earn so little.
Sometimes cheerleaders require arriving at games five hours early to prepare for their performance or spending 30 to 40 hours a week practicing, and yet they are paid far less than anyone else involved in Stadium.
In fact, they don’t just earn little, they earn minimum wage. Fifteen-year-old lifeguards who have just started their first job earn the same amount as those cheerleaders who spend 14 hours a day in the stadium and most of their lives on buses to and from games.
In 2021, NFL cheerleaders finally took a stand and rose to the occasion, filing lawsuits to help their cause.

In 2021, a series of lawsuits by these cheerleaders resulted in 10 of the NFL’s 26 teams being sued for theft of wages, unsafe working conditions, sexual harassment and discrimination.
The lawsuits included teams such as the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tampa Bay cheerleaders’ lawsuit settled for $825,000, and the Cincinnati cheerleaders settled for $255,000, according to the Expert Institute.
Since then, a national conversation has erupted regarding the exploitation of women in sport, and now cheerleaders are respected and paid a bit more – but still not as much as they should be.
