Lots of takeaways from Browns vs Panthers in Week 1

The Cleveland Browns played the first half of the game in North Carolina but needed a long field goal from rookie K Cade York to defeat the Carolina Panthers.

The Browns gained 355 net yards and 38:26 time of possession compared to the Panthers’ 261 yards and 21:34. The game went down to the wire although the visitors had no turnovers to tell you how strange the game was.

Carolina’s new starting QB and former Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield had 125 of his 235 yards coming on two fumbles by his former team. He finished the day 16/27 for 235 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Browns moved two backs with their new kicker.

Here are some details from the game with more details to come:

The Browns moved slowly down the field on their first drive but Brissett overthrew Amari Cooper on third down. On the next play, Cleveland decided to go for it on fourth down.

Similar to last year, the conversion didn’t work because Brissett was too far outside on a pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones.

Both of Brissett’s misses were caution throws. One to Cooper would have been a huge success or bust. One at Peoples-Jones should have kept the car running.

Brissett overthrew RB Kareem Hunt on the next drive, again safely on the throw.

Beyond safety, Brissett’s accuracy and decisions were questioned throughout the day. He finished the game 18/34 for 147 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers had six plays for five yards and -5 net yards due to the penalty. The Browns’ defense was quick on the offensive end. Mayfield’s catch, like the stoppage, but the defense started the way they expected.

On the third possession, Carolina got their first down. It came because of the abuse of the passer who was weak, at least.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last for the defense which gave up a lot of big and offensive plays. Ben McAdoo began to use Cleveland’s pressure against them with a few screens, quick passes and uses.

A few big plays accounted for less than half of the Panthers total yards on Sunday.

DE Jadeveon Clowney got his hands on two separate passes from Mayfield in the first quarter. It’s something Browns fans have seen all too often. Clowney probably found more fun in the prank:

Rookies DE Alex Wright and DT Perrion Winfrey both caught dropped passes in the second quarter that frustrated Mayfield. That frustration led directly to Grant Delpit’s intervention in the next game.

The Browns offense struggled early in the game but rookie Corey Bojorquez threw his first two touchdowns. Bojorquez pinned the Panthers inside their 10-yard line each time, once at the 5 and a second time at the 8-yard line.

With the offense struggling to find a rhythm, having a strong player is important.

Unfortunately, the most important punt of the game went into the end zone with 2:16 left in the game for only two points. by Cleveland.

Everyone knows that RB Nick Chubb is good but it is important to show all the different ways he is great. One of the smaller things is his ability to get the extra yards needed. A 2-yard gain for most backs becomes a 4-yard gain for Chubb.

He rarely allows a bad block or a big defensive play to slow the team down.

Chubb finished the game with 141 yards on 22 carries.

Leading blocker, leading rusher, pass catcher and cornerback entertainer, RB Kareem Hunt does it all for Cleveland’s offense. Lined up on the goal line, Hunt pounced for the game’s first goal.

Hunt finished the game with 70 yards and two carries.

In the backfield, second-year DT Tommy Togiai made some big plays for the Browns’ defense after the snap. He first got a sack on Mayfield while packing down the field.

On the next play, Togiai felt the screen coming and stuck to RB Christian McCaffrey which forced Mayfield to throw the ball in the dirt and the punt was dismissed. sport.

A lot of questions about Cleveland’s defensive backroom but Togiai made the most of those two games.

Donovan Peoples-Jones should have been a breakout star last year. It didn’t happen for a variety of reasons but he showed strong hands and a good way to run in Week 1.

The receivers in the second quarter converted a second and long first down. All the defensive backs are there but the third year still made the plays.

Late in the fourth quarter, Peoples-Jones came down for a crucial touchdown to keep the drive alive. On the last drive of the game, DPJ came up with another difficult catch in the middle of the field which resulted in the field goal.

Peoples-Jones had the most catches (11) and led the team with six receptions for 60 yards.

Despite a good start by the Browns defense, Ian Thomas caught a pass and took it down inside the five yard line. S John Johnson III’s good fumble kept him from scoring but the Panthers pushed for a goal.

Conversely, Cleveland’s defense often struggles to cover tight ends. DC defensive end Joe Woods struggled with wide receivers at times last season.

The Panthers’ offense struggled until that big play put them in a position to score their first points. Can’t get that kind of hype. In this case, it seems that Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and / or Grant Delpit were not in the right position.

Then, late in the fourth quarter, with nine points, WR Robbie Anderson got wide open for a 75-yard touchdown pass.

It appeared to be a mix-up between CB Greg Newsome II and FS Johnson. Either way, two Carolina wide receivers made game-changing plays.

Although there were many concerns about the way the Browns finished the game, Christian McCaffrey did well. The Panthers’ best offense had just 10 carries for 33 yards and four receptions for 24 yards.

The speed of play of Cleveland’s linebackers is a big part of closing down the running back. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Anthony Walker Jr. and Jacob Phillips both have the ability to get to the line on the fast lane.

Assuming today’s performance will translate into future games is scary but it bodes well for their ability to hold off quick back-to-backs. this year.

At the end of the third quarter, DE Myles Garrett ended a drive by himself with two sacks of Mayfield. The second was a sack that Garrett almost recovered.

In a fluke, Mayfield was hit behind the goal line by Garrett on another play but it counted as a punt for a loss.

Going into the game, the Browns’ sack record was just four for Garrett.

The story of Cade York may have started early this season but it finally “counted” when York hit a 58-yard game-winning field goal for the Browns in his first regular season game:

There is a lot to talk about in this game but York’s kicking is the most important to enjoy.
