Louis native lands a spot as a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader

Hayes was selected as one of nine rookies to cheer on the American team this season.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louisan was on the sidelines of AT&T Stadium to cheer on the Dallas Cowboys in their home opener on Sunday.

The stars align with 22-year-old Kayla Hayes, the youngest cheerleader on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders team.

“I definitely shed a few tears. It’s really exciting to know that I got my 15 stars and my shoes from nine weeks ago,” said Hayes.

Hayes was selected as one of nine rookies fans will see on the field this year dancing for one of the league’s most popular teams.

The Florissant native told 5 On Your Side that she’s been fascinated by NFL fans and NBA players since she was a little girl.

“I think when I was younger I was seeing a lot of African American women. Especially when the Rams were in St. Louis and just seeing people like me really pushed me to know that if they do it. Then I could see myself there one day,” he said.

His support system at home noticed that too.

“We used to make music videos when we were younger and we used to do our tricks together and it just took off. I would do a dance routine first and he would watch me,” said Brittany Hayes, Kayla’s older sister.

“In his first rehearsal. He smiled and everyone knew all his steps. I’m very proud of him. He’s beautiful,” added Rhonda Hayes, Kayla’s mother.

At the age of five, Hayes happily broke through to DK Dance Productions in St. Louis County where he danced and won awards until he graduated from Westminster Christian Academy where he became happy again.

Hayes continued to build her skills at Butler University in Indianapolis where she was on the school’s dance team and served as director her junior and senior years.

“To continue dancing after college, and to be a professional, that’s a very high honor, so we’re very happy for her,” said Marion Hayes, Kayla’s father.

To his coach Darci Ward, he was the student every teacher wanted.

“What I remember most about him as a kid is his smile,” Ward said.

Ward, who continues to teach junior high, praised Hayes’ style and desire to improve.

“It works hard. He asks questions. He wants to know more. He wants to be better every time,” he added.

The duo tied on CMT’s show: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: The Making of a Team That Wins Young Cheerleaders Working Hard to Become One of America’s Sweethearts.

“He kind of knew it was going to be you in a few years. When I was going to watch the show. It’s crazy to think that I’m still living this dream right now,” Hayes said.

Ward welcomed the actor back home to the studio to help him with his audition which turned out to be one of many stages.

“To see them take hold of their dream and take it far is the best feeling. He has a lot of eyes on him for the great role model that he has been,” said Ward.

Hayes shared advice for other young girls who want to make it.

“Do it. Keep dreaming big and setting new goals every day,” he said.

Hayes’ family traveled to Dallas and were at the stadium on Sunday to cheer him on.
