The Martin High School cheerleaders completed the National Cheerleading Association Summer Camp June 23-25 at the MHS Batey Gym. With its great success, the team won several awards.

The three-day NCA Summer Camp is the best way to build a solid foundation, create lasting team bonds and learn best practices from stunts to dance and leadership.

“The camp challenged each member as much as they could. They did stunts, but most importantly they strengthened their trust in each other. The most rewarding part of this was seeing the squad work as a cohesive group where they pushed each other to be better,” said MHS Cheer sponsor Carl Medina. “I am very proud of these young athletes and look forward to all their future success.”

In recognition of their efforts, the MHS cheerleading squad received three Superior Ribbons, a Technical Excellence Award and the coveted Herkie Team Award.

Six teammates including Zoey Gonzalez, Jorge Elizondo, Kylie Lopez, Lizeth Martinez, Carolina Cortez and Monik Leyva were NCA All-American nominees. Moreover, the team received the coveted Spirit Stick and a bid to the NCA High School Nationals in Dallas, Texas.

According to their website, the NCA was founded in 1948 by Lawrence “Herkie” Herkimer and continues to uphold its vision of creating an atmosphere for the cultivation of all cheerleading. The association embraces its rich heritage as the first cheerleading company and continues to lead the way with innovative camp curriculum, industry-leading championships and events that reward the hard-working, well-rounded cheerleaders in America today.

The Tiger cheerleaders welcomed the Cubs from Christen High School to their camp. The cheer team, led by CMS Cheer sponsor Jessica Alvarado Ayala, received an outstanding ribbon and a top ribbon. In addition, CMS cheerleader Regina Sanchez was nominated as an All-American.

In preparation for the upcoming cheer and competition season, the team worked hard to perfect the sport. The MHS cheerleading squad plans to excel at the upcoming NCA High School Nationals.
