The assistant vice president of George Mason University and director of athletics Bradford Edwards will leave Mason in October to become general manager of NFL Alumni, the National Football League announced on September 13. Edwards will remain at Mason until October 12.
Edwards, who joined Mason as director of athletics in 2014, began his postgraduate career in professional soccer for the Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons. Among his many professional football achievements he was a defensive co-captain and second MVP on the Redskins Super Bowl XXVI championship team.
“Brad was a dynamic director of athletics who moved the department forward in terms of student athletic and academic performance as well as a level of community support Mason can now rely on,” said Mason president Gregory Washington. “NFL alumni have recovered one of their stellar alumni, and we’re excited about Brad and the NFL.”
While at Mason, Edwards led departmental efforts that provided over $ 42 million in revenue contracts and commitments, highlighted by the name rights deal for EagleBank Arena, a long relationship with Adidas, and a long-term corporate sponsorship deal with PlayFly Sports.
Patriots have won 11 conference championships, and individual student-athletes Mason have won 19 post-season seats in the past seven years in athletics (6), swimming and diving (1), and wrestling (12). After earning eight Academic All-America honors between 1990 and 2015 as a department of athletics, Patriot student athletes came together to earn eight Academic All-America titles during Edwards’s tenure. Under his supervision, 394 student athletes achieved the George Mason Provost Scholar Athlete Award, including a record 65 in 2020-21. The award is given to student athletes who have achieved a minimum of 38 credit hours and a total grade point average of 3.75 or better.
“While I’m excited to join NFL Alumni as their new CEO, I will fondly remember my time at George Mason University,” Edwards said. “I still remember the first time I walked around campus in May 1990 as a young NFL player to train out of season. Mason’s growth has been rapid since then. I am extremely grateful to the student athletes and many colleagues with whom I have had the honor of working with. I am also very grateful to Mason Nation, one of the best fans in the world.
