Spadaro: Thinking big about the Eagles offense

An offense that showed in 2021 its ability to win with brute force and a rushing attack that featured one of the NFL’s top play receivers in A.J. Brown in the offseason, which means exactly what for the Eagles in the 2022 season that begins in just a few weeks when Training Camp opens at the NovaCare Complex?

“We added another great player to our offense, a player who can do a lot of things to help us,” quarterback Jalen Hurts said.

After coming through a healthy and productive spring, the Eagles hope to hit the ground running even when Training Camp opens in South Philadelphia. This is an offense that brings back their key personnel from a season ago, the offensive coaching staff, a lot of confidence, and adds Brown to the wide receiver corps and second-round draft pick Cam Jurgens to the interior of the offensive line.

“We have a lot of pieces,” center Jason Kelce said. “There’s more to it than that, as you know. We have to put in the work and the effort and focus on the little things and sort that all out. We understand the scheme, so it helps going into Training Camp. Look, teams understand what we’re trying to do and we know what the defense is trying to do, so it comes down to executing the play calls and we feel like we’ll be able to to do that.

“I think everyone is looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. Of course, we’re excited. When it comes to the regular season, there’s a lot of factors in play and that’s the fun part, trying come up with her game plan to attack the weaknesses of the defense and then go out and make it work.”

Right off the bat is the truth, the essence of what the Eagles are trying to accomplish on offense in 2022: it’s not about “being a running team,” or “having the first offense.” The run/pass ratio, the importance of which has been debated for years, is not really the conversation here. The question asked is this – What kind of offense do the Eagles hope to have this season? – the answer is probably best expressed this way: “They want to have an offense that can win against any type of defense.”

That’s the idea, right? Defenses spend all week strategizing how to hurt this offense and offense and understand the challenges. The Eagles, as the offense is currently constructed, have the ability to dictate a defense that shines in the box by running behind an offensive line that is one of the best in the game. Teams that load up the box and deal with injuries to win from the pocket must contend with a receiving corps that includes Brown and sophomore DeVonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert and weapons out of the backfield.

Defenses understand that they will have to contend with an Eagles offense that is versatile in the passing game and a running game that includes Hurts’ ability to make explosive plays with his feet. The likely scenario is that defenses will focus on what every defense tries to do in every NFL game – take the quarterback out of his comfort zone. And the Eagles feel their third-year signal caller has made positive progress heading into 2022 Training Camp.

“I think Jalen is more comfortable in the offense,” Sirianni said as spring practice ended. “That’s just part of the process the second year. He knows where the receivers are going against different looks. He knows where to go with the football a little bit quicker. We did our job as coaches, and we can’t I don’t want him to say we’ve done a good job, but he understands what we’ve done as coaches, what he likes and what he does well and all these different things.

“The reason we know Jalen is going to continue to get better is because of his character, and his football character and his personal character. He’s just the type of guy that’s going to going to reach his full potential because of all the off putting. his pitching qualities I also noticed that just the crispness of the fall, it was the fundamentals – his fundamentals have improved, and he is work hard on that.

“He is working every day to get better, and I am very happy where he is at the moment, but we must continue to lay the foundation.”

That’s what Training Camp is for, to continue laying the groundwork for the regular season after. If you’re wondering “what kind of offense will the Eagles have this season,” don’t think about it in such narrow terms as “running team” or “passing team.”

Think of it as a “winning team,” because if the Eagles do what they want to accomplish, they will have made themselves a winning offense against anything the defense is trying to pull off. That’s all that matters. That’s the bottom line. Nobody cares about stats. Nobody cares about fantasy football.

The offense’s success will be measured in wins, no matter how they are accomplished.
