Marcus Epps has been impressive through the first three days of training camp

After Saturday’s practice, recently promoted Defensive Passing Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach Dennard Wilson was asked how he knows Marcus Epps is ready for this upcoming season.

His answer was simple – watch the film from last year.

Epps had a productive season for the Eagles in 2021; He recorded a career-high 56 tackles and five passes defensed, including an interception, while competing for reps against a season-long roster of defensive backs Anthony Harris and safeties Rodney McLeod.

He never let up, despite the depth of experienced talent around him. And now, it’s paying off.

“Every day last year, he fought. He was tough. He was physical. He was always where he was supposed to be and he made the plays he was supposed to make,” Wilson said.

Entering his fourth year in the league, Epps has a chance to take on a more prominent role in the Eagles’ defensive scheme in the absence of McLeod, who signed with the Colts in April.

From what the team has seen at Training Camp so far, he is preparing to make an impact.

“When we talk about the safeties, a man we spent a lot of time talking about in the offseason, was Marcus Epps. No one works harder than Marcus,” said Executive Vice President / General Manager Howie Roseman.

“This is a man of course who played last year in rotation with those guys, and you want your young players to step up and develop a bigger role.”

Moments after receiving a rousing review from Roseman on Day 1, Epps picked off a pass from Jalen Hurts to mark his first interception of camp.

Epps’ confidence is noticeable. He spent the offseason training at his newly established gym in Costa Mesa, California with his business partner and longtime trainer Karif Byrd. Its 5,000-square-foot space complete with a turf field provided plenty of room for the season’s gains, which have already translated into elevated play.

“I feel like these first few days, I’m flying around,” Epps said. “So, you know, like I said, I’m trying to keep building on that every single day because I’m not there by any means. And I know there’s still a lot to learn I have.”

In a 2019 GQ interview, Epps denied the long-standing rumor that he’s related to fellow actor Omar Epps, saying, “Are Mike Epps and Omar Epps related? No, I think we got the same master , however."
