Cheerleaders, mascots, field reporters banned from taking to the field in 2020

The 2020 NFL season will look different in yet another area due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that cheerleaders and mascots will not be allowed on the field during the 2020 season, per updated NFL-NFLPA protocols sent to clubs. Network reporters and pregame TV reporters will also be barred from the field in 2020, according to protocols.

While teams individually work on plans for safe stadium settings for the percentage of spectators in 2020, another part of the usual NFL scene will change due to the current state of affairs in the country. Instead of watching live feed from the back of the end zones on sunny Sunday mornings or sideline reporters relaying the latest from just behind the team bench, these people will appear from concourses and empty seating areas. The group in charge of cheering up fans will also be absent, meaning we won’t see footage of a happy (or freaked out) Jaxson de Ville, KC Wolf or Sir Purr, among others.

It will be a game watched and delivered from the stands, which we can all agree is still better than no game at all.

At 42, Laura Vikmanis is the oldest cheerleader in the NFL. A registered dietitian, trainer and mother of a teenager who decided to make a team and joined the Cincinnati Bengals’ Ben-Gals in 2009, Vikmanis serves as a guide to her younger fellow cheerleaders.
