“Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Building the Team” – Episode Nine: Field of Fears

It’s the start of week six of training camp and there are 42 women left with six more to cut for a final roster of 36.

Kelli Finglass and Judy Trammell have their first outdoor practice at Highland Park High School’s stadium. It’s a way for them to see who is the best player on the team, because everything is more visual on the field. It’s also a reality check for the girls, who are learning just how big a stage the soccer field can be.

The girls will learn how to enter the field, a choreography that introduces the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders at every football game, which then leads into the signature “Thunderstruck” dance. This is a very complex number, you move five yards in four counts while doing upper body choreography. Also, you have to stay in a perfectly straight line and stop and pinpoint your line, or it will be totally visible to everyone in the stands.

Melissa Rycroft is back to help newbie candidates. She will work with them to find out what they think their weaknesses are and how they can improve.

Along with DCC veteran Gina, Melissa tapes the girls dancing and then plays them back to see where they can improve. This is an opportunity for them to turn their negatives into positives so that they can stand out more in the studio and on the court.

Kelli and Judy bring the girls back to The Highlander, Highland Park’s stadium, to perform their first boot camp entrance and signature dance. Most of the girls have never performed in cowboy boots before, so it will be a big adjustment, let alone dancing in the boots on the football field.

Tough decisions have to be made and emotional office visits are underway as Kelli and Judy struggle to change the roster.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team airs Thursday nights at 10/9c on CMT.

Surprisingly, NFL cheerleaders don’t make as much as you think. On average, cheerleaders earn around $150 per game. That works out to about $22,500 a year. They also receive $50 to $75 if they are featured for public speaking.
