The Washington Commanders get a mascot but these 4 NFL teams don’t have one

(NEXSTAR) – There’s Sir Purr with the Carolina Panthers and Sourdough Sam with the San Francisco 49ers. The Baltimore Ravens have Poe and the Indianapolis Colts have Blue. No, these aren’t professional athletes you’ve never heard of – mascots.

There are a total of 32 teams in the National Football League. Five are mascot-less from the 2022 season: the Green Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Chargers, the New York Giants, the New York Jets, and the Washington Commanders.

Here’s a look at the current NFL team mascots:

Of the five teams without a mascot, one is on the way to adding one. As part of their current update, the Commanders are giving fans the chance to vote on their scots later this month.

However, here are five NFL teams that, as of the start of the 2022 season, do not have an on-field mascot.

Green Bay Packers

There isn’t really a good mascot to represent the Packers, although the team has tried. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers introduced a giant bearded man known as the Packy Packer in the 1980s. He only survived two seasons and the Packers haven’t had a mascot since.

A Packers spokesperson tells Nexstar that the mascot never seemed to fit or fit with the team’s “already rich history and culture.”

“We see that our fans are enjoying our games and enjoying the team in their own different ways.”

When they don’t have a mascot, the Packers have cheerleaders.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers had an unofficial mascot of sorts – Boltman – while in San Diego. This may interest you : How much do NFL players and cheerleaders make?. In 2018, the man behind Boltman, Dan Jauregui, retired after 22 years.

In 2020, the Chargers “acquired” the unnamed furry mascot, Bolt, a dog on his way to becoming a service dog. The Chargers teamed up with Canine Companions of Independence to follow Bolt on his journey. He also appeared at various team games and sports.

Bolt has graduated and the Chargers have brought in a new kid, Brisket. The team used to have a team of players, known as the Charger Girls, but it was reportedly disbanded last year.

The Chargers did not respond to Nexstar’s request for comment.

New York Giants

However, there was a Campbell Soup ad in the early 2010s that featured a big-headed woman in a Giants player costume.

Also, the team has no cheerleaders.

The Giants did not respond to Nexstar’s request for comment.

New York Jets

While it might seem easy for the Jets to have a mascot, the team doesn’t have one – they can even see it on their FAQ page. The team consists of cheerleaders, known as the Jets Flight Crew.

The Jets did not respond to Nexstar’s request for comment.

Washington Commanders

Of all the five teams on this list, the Commanders are the closest to having a mascot. As part of their renewal, Commanders recently asked fans to vote on what kind of mascot they should have.

Voting is now closed, but fans were able to choose from one of four categories: dog, hog, history, or hero.

According to the Commanders’ website, a handout of the most voted picks will be shared during the team’s game on September 25. Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite design.
