The Falcons select a skill player for practice squad promotion against the Cleveland Browns

Caleb Huntley is getting his second chance to play in a Falcons game this season. Atlanta made the freshman running back a standard practice squad lift for Week 4 content against Cleveland, the team announced Saturday afternoon.

Huntley received the designation before the Week 2 loss to the L.A. Rams, where he had a 3-yard run on three offensive plays.

Huntley provides injury protection to a position that is one man short on the 53-man roster, with Damien Williams currently on injured reserve.

There’s another injury problem at running back, with Cordarrelle Patterson formally listed as questionable with a knee ailment.

Patterson has been the main feature for the Falcons this year, with Tyler Allgeier operating as the primary backup. Avery Williams is also on the active roster, but is primarily involved in special teams and occasional backfield responsibilities, often in passing situations.

Huntley signed with the Falcons in 2021 as an undrafted free agent. He spent most of last season on the team’s practice squad, ending up there in 2022 after a strong preseason didn’t end with a roster spot.

The Atlanta native has been a standard practice squad lift twice now, and he can be lifted a third time and return to the practice squad with no issues. However, after that, the Falcons must sign him to the 53-man roster if they want to promote him again.

I want more mental stimulation than I would get playing football. I want to participate in the struggle that is taking place in our country, and I have the opportunity to do so now. Maybe not in a year. And then this: “I resign with regret but not with sorrow.”
