Cheerleaders from across the region converged on Southgate recently for what is being called Michigan’s largest cheerleading recruiting opportunity.
The second annual College Recruitment Combine for Cheerleading, Acro and Tumbling was held July 31 at Downriver Gymnastics, attracting more than 130 athletes from across the Midwest. A total of 16 faculties were represented at the meeting.
Athletes were given the opportunity to show off their jumps and tumbling skills in an individual showcase, then participated in open stunt time with varsity athletes.
“Athletes have been given several scholarship offers and many more explored opportunities to continue their athletic careers at the next level,” said Kelli Cook, owner of Downriver Gymnastics.
The youngest athletes were 13 years old, those who will soon become freshmen. Attendees were there to learn more about the colleges and universities that were featured at the event.
Representatives from participating colleges and universities included head coaches, assistant coaches, admissions counselors, as well as current student-athletes.
Those current student athletes played a big role in the event, as they were a bit behind the high schoolers.
“Since Michigan High School Association competitive cheer doesn’t allow students to be stunted, but most colleges do, this gave these athletes a great opportunity that they wouldn’t otherwise have,” Cook said.
