BALTIMORE — Top Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman will have foot surgery on a Lisfranc injury and miss the rest of the season, coach John Harbaugh said Thursday.

Will Gordon was frustrated by his tough finish last week in Bermuda. He has no complaints about his great start in Mexico. Gordon had a 62 in the first round and leads the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Russell Henley had a 63. Gordon played his final four holes in 4-over par in Bermuda’s wind. He tries to manage his expectations at the Mayakoba resort. Harris English and Francesco Molinari are 64. English is still trying to get his game back from hip surgery early in the year. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler opened with a 65.

The Titans and Chiefs meet Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium in a showdown between 5-2 division leaders in the lead-up to the AFC playoffs. Tennessee is coming off a 17-10 win over Houston in which Derrick Henry ran for 219 yards and two TDs while the Chiefs had the week off after a 44-23 rout at San Francisco. The Titans have won five of the last six in the series, including a wild-card playoff game, although the one victory by Kansas City came in the AFC Championship Game in the 2019 season. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is 20-3 when his team comes off a bye.

The Cincinnati Bengals will have to adjust to life without injured receiver Ja’Marr Chase, at least for now. With Chase out with a hip injury Monday night, the Bengals were swept by the Cleveland Browns and slipped to 4-4. The receiver will be on the shelf again on Sunday when Cincinnati hosts the Carolina Panthers. Carolina lost a wild one in overtime 37-34 to Atlanta last week. Former XFL quarterback P.J. Walker will make his fourth straight start for the Panthers.

The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off their ugliest game in nearly eight years and spent the week regrouping in Florida and trying to get right. No one would likely choose to play the embarrassed and motivated Raiders right now. Jacksonville has no choice. The Raiders and Jaguars meet on Sunday with both teams on a roll. Las Vegas is fresh off a 24-0 shutout of New Orleans, where it managed 183 yards. Jacksonville is hoping to avoid carryover from a winless October that featured a five-game skid and new levels of frustration.

Ross Chastain’s video game-inspired ride along the wall at Martinsville took him across the finish line, into the NASCAR championship final and around the world. Like it or not, the hands-free, mouth-to-the-floor Chevy slingshot ride catapulted Chastain and NASCAR into the social media stratosphere. A championship is on the line this weekend at Phoenix Raceway, but almost as much attention was paid to Chastain’s bold move last week as to who will win the Cup Series title between him, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell.

Who is the best back up RB?

Rebeca Andrade from Brazil has made history at the World Gymnastics Championships. The 23-year-old became the first woman from South America to claim the world title after a dynamic performance during the final. Andrade, an all-around silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, posted a total of 56.899 to win on the road. The 23-year-old used a dynamic jump in the first rotation to sprint to a lead she never threatened to relinquish. Shilese Jones of the United States was second, while Jessica Gadirova of Great Britain was third.Known for his good hands, Amari Cooper’s arm needs work. Cleveland’s talented wide receiver was able to laugh off a trick play that went badly wrong in the Browns’ 32-13 win over Cincinnati on Monday. Cooper fumbled on his first NFL pass, which was intercepted. It was a rare mistake for the 28-year-old, who has been everything the Browns hoped for when they acquired him in a March trade from Dallas. Cooper has led on and off the field. He’s also given quarterback Jacoby Brissett a reliable target to complement the league’s best rushing attack. The Houston Astros’ World Series no-hitter was the most-watched Game 4 in three years. Houston’s 5-0 victory over Philadelphia, which tied the series at two games apiece, was watched by 11,809,000 viewers on Fox. That was up 9% from the 10,789,000 for Atlanta’s 3-2 win over the Astros in Game 4 last year and up 23% from the 9,563,000 for Tampa Bay’s 8-7 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in game 4 in 2020. The first four games this year averaged 11,329,000 viewers on Fox, up 4% from last year’s four-game average of 10,918,000.
The Dallas Cowboys have run a defense-first mentality into the NFC playoffs. The defending NFC East champions are 6-2 heading into their bye week. The Cowboys are in that spot because of a defense that helped them win four of five games without injured star quarterback Dak Prescott. Reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons leads a unit that started out as the stingiest for Dallas since the Doomsday era of the 1970s. Coach Mike McCarthy says he and his staff knew before the season started that defense would define his third Dallas team. The critics of Zach Wilson seem louder this week with doubts about his ability at an all-time high. The word “bust” has been thrown around by some fans and reporters when referring to the New York Jets quarterback, who is coming off the worst game of his second NFL season. A four-game winning streak muted much of that until last Sunday, when Wilson’s three-interception performance in a 22-17 loss to New England raised eyebrows. Wilson says he’s not aware of any of that. He is solely focused on continuing to improve and not making the type of mistakes he made last week.——————————————–
James Harden is expected to miss about a month with a strained tendon in his right foot. Harden was injured during the Sixers’ loss at Washington on Wednesday, and the 10-time All-Star will be evaluated again in two weeks. The Sixers are 4-5 heading into Friday’s home game against the New York Knicks.Ray Guy, the first player to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has died. He was 72. Southern Mississippi, where Guy starred before a long NFL career, says he died after a lengthy illness. Guy played 14 seasons with the Raiders and was a three-time All-Pro selection. In 2014, he became the first player to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame solely for his punting. A native of Thomson, Georgia, Guy is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Here’s a look back at Week 8 action and fantasy advice for the upcoming week:
Los Angeles Times NFL writer Sam Farmer examines this week’s matchups. Lines according to FanDuel Sportsbook (O/U = over/under). Last week’s record 10-5 (.667); season 71-52-1 (.582). Using point spreads with the scores Farmer predicted, the record against the spread last week would h…Kirk Cousins returns to play Washington as the visiting quarterback for the first time with the 6-1 Minnesota Vikings facing the Commanders. Cousins spent his first six NFL seasons with Washington before leaving in free agency. He has since stabilized the position for Minnesota, while the Commanders have continued uncertainty with Taylor Heinicke now filling in for injured starter Carson Wentz. Cousins and the Vikings are riding high on a five-game hitting streak in which he has thrown for eight touchdowns and just two interceptions. The NBA fined the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder $25,000 on Thursday for violations of the league’s injury reporting policies. In the Clippers’ case, the league found that the team did not disclose an accurate game availability status for guard Brandon Boston Jr. and forward Moussa Diabate ahead of the team’s game against New Orleans on Sunday. On Monday, the Thunder did not disclose the availability status of guard Josh Giddey “in an accurate and timely manner” before their home game against Orlando, the league said.
