The move left them with six cornerbacks on their depth chart, four of which are rookies.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Commonwealth of Kentucky is the self-proclaimed horse racing capital of the world. It has the most famous race track, the most famous breed and more than 450 breeding farms.

Phillies shortstop Kyle Schwarber suddenly ended that record hitting streak by a Houston pitcher. Schwarber scored on Justin Verlander’s second pitch in Game 5 of the World Series, a night after four Astros pitchers combined for a no-hitter against Philadelphia. The Astros held the Phillies hitless for 11 innings dating back to Game 3, the longest streak of any postseason set by the New York Yankees in 1939. Schwarber opened the bottom of the first with a liner into the right seats. He tied Derek Jeter and Jimmy Rollins for the career postseason home run lead with three. Verlander started the day 0-6 with a 6.07 ERA in eight World Series starts. Cristian Javier and three Houston relievers combined to shut out the Phillies on Wednesday night.

NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets have suspended guard Kyrie Irving for at least five games without pay after his anti-Semitic remarks.

For the second year in a row, the Colts and Patriots meet their seasons at the crossroads. The Colts are still adjusting after coach Frank Reich released quarterback Matt Ryan last week and started second-year Sam Ehlinger. Reich shook things up even more this week, firing offensive coordinator Marcus Brady in hopes of restarting a unit that had scored 17 or fewer points in five of its previous seven games. Meanwhile, Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is coming off his first win since returning to the lineup after a three-week layoff with an ankle injury. But New England’s offense has managed just one touchdown in the two games since returning.

There isn’t a single matchup in Week 9, unless you count the last two Super Bowl champions battling it out to see who comes closest to missing the playoffs. Six teams are on hold, including the Giants, and there are only two games at 4 p.m. window (the aforementioned L.A. Rams-Tampa Bay con…

CHICAGO – Pedro Grifol put on a Chicago White Sox home jersey with the number 5 and his name on the back Thursday morning at Guaranteed Rate Field.

CHICAGO – Pedro Grifolo’s indictment of the Chicago White Sox’s 2022 season came early during his introductory press conference as the team’s new manager Thursday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

BALTIMORE — Top Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman will have foot surgery for a Lisfranc injury and miss the rest of the season, coach John Harbaugh said Thursday.

Will Gordon was frustrated with his difficult finish last week in Bermuda. There are no complaints about his great start in Mexico. Gordon had a first-round 62 and leads the Mayakoba Tech World Championship. Russell Henley had a 63. Gordon played his final four holes in 4-over par in the Bermuda wind. He tries to live up to his expectations at the Mayakoba resort. Harris English and Francesco Molinari are 64 years old. English is still trying to get his game back after hip surgery earlier in the year. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler opened with a 65.

The Titans and Chiefs meet Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium in a showdown between the 5-2 division leaders in the thick of the AFC playoff race. Tennessee is coming off a 17-10 win over Houston in which Derrick Henry ran for 219 yards and two TDs while the Chiefs had a week off after a 44-23 loss to San Francisco. The Titans have won five of the last six in the series, including the wild-card playoff game, although Kansas City’s one win came in the 2019 AFC championship game. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is 20-3 when his teams split.

The Cincinnati Bengals have to get used to life without injured wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, at least for now. With Chase out with a hip injury on Monday night, the Bengals were swept by the Cleveland Browns to get back to 4-4. The receiver will be on the shelf again on Sunday when Cincinnati hosts the Carolina Panthers. Carolina lost a wild 37-34 overtime loss to Atlanta last week. Former XFL quarterback P.J. Walker made his fourth straight start for the Panthers.

The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off their ugliest game in nearly eight years and spent the week regrouping in Florida and trying to make amends. Probably no one would choose to play the disgraced and motivated Raiders right now. Jacksonville has no choice. The Raiders and Jaguars will meet on Sunday, and both teams will be reeling. Las Vegas is fresh off a 24-0 shutout of New Orleans in which it managed 183 yards. Jacksonville is hoping to avoid carrying over from a winless October that included a five-game skid and new levels of frustration.

Ross Chastain’s video game-inspired ride along the wall at Martinsville took him across the finish line, into the NASCAR championship final and around the world. Like it or not, driving a hands-free Chevy slingshot has catapulted Chastain and NASCAR into the social media stratosphere. The championship is on the line this weekend at Phoenix Raceway, but there was almost as much attention on Chastain’s bold move last week as it was on who would win the Cup Series title between him, Joey Logan, Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell.
