According to WPXI, a Pennsylvania cheerleader claims she was suspended from school for a piece of gummy candy that turned out to be drugs.
Jekara Jackson, a freshman at Bishop Canevin High School in Pittsburgh, told WPXI she was given a fishing ring at a football game by another cheerleader. But as soon as she ate it, several teammates started laughing at her, the newspaper said.
“I’m very upset,” Jackson said. “It’s very heartbreaking that someone I thought was my friend gave me this. What if I could die?”
According to WPXI, Jackson’s mother, Jaerica Russell, who was not at the game, told the station that the school never notified her that her child was sick. However, on Monday, she was notified that her daughter was suspended.
“He started throwing up, he had chills,” Russell said. “No one is being held responsible except for her, for something she had nothing to do with.”
According to WPXI, Russell claims that the school’s athletic director informed him that his son never received medical treatment after the reaction to the candy. However, Carnegie’s police chief told WPXI that he was at the game that night, saw Jackson acting lethargic, and that he received medical attention.
The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh sent the following statement to WPXI:
“This is a confidential student matter. Please be assured that we take the safety of our school community very seriously and are in compliance with our school policies and procedures.”
Meanwhile, Russell says that the girl who gave her child the candy not only took her daughter’s coveted position in the team as a flyer, but also did not receive any form of punishment.
“I believe this was hazing, like some kind of Halloween trick to get him back. But it just wasn’t fun. It’s not a trick. It’s not fun at all,” Russell told the station.
The family filed a police report and told WPXI they don’t know when Jackson will be able to return to school and the cheerleading team.
