Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder is considering selling the NFL franchise that he bought in 1999 and grew fans for decades. While there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Snyder’s plans, some around the NFL think they know his motivation.
Snyder hired Bank of America Securities to evaluate sale options, from selling a partial stake in the franchise to submitting offers for the entire team. Immediately after the commanders announced the news, several celebrities and millionaires expressed interest.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, celebrities Kevin Durant, Matthew McConaughey and Jay-Z, along with billionaires Byron Allen and Matt Ishbia have all publicly expressed interest in buying Commanders. More names are expected to be involved and any sale would set a record for the most ever spent on an American sports franchise.

ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. shared on the ESPN Daily podcast that many believe Snyder’s strategy with commanders may be motivated by his desire to get back at Bezos and The Washington Post.
“We’re also hearing that part of Snyder’s strategy may be a ploy to make offers to the group of Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos. That would add fuel to Snyder’s claim that The Post was looking to acquire it, with Bezos stepping in and To be able to buy commanders.”
There is a long history between Bezos and Snyder that would definitely affect a potential sale. The NFL might love to have one of the wealthiest people in the United States join its ownership group, especially because of the record price it could pay for the Commanders and the impact it would have on the franchise values of all 32 teams.

History between Jeff Bezos, Daniel Snyder
Bezos bought The Washington Post in 2014, paying $250 million to buy one of the most popular newspapers in the United States. Years later, The Post reported more than a dozen allegations of a toxic culture of sexual harassment and verbal abuse under Snyder.
More women came forward in July 2020 after the original report. Former Washington cheerleaders detailed troubling details about the workplace culture at Snyder’s organization, from sexist rules to Snyder’s unauthorized request for a personalized lewd video of the cheerleaders.
After an independent investigation found the claims valid, the NFL fined Snyder $10 million and asked him to remove himself from overseeing day-to-day operations. The Commanders owner said what happened within the organization was “out of hand” and suggested the team’s toxic culture was the result of specific people not working for the franchise.
Many current and former employees of the team later refuted that idea, telling The Post that the organizational culture was what Snyder wanted and that the environment he created was like an “abusive relationship.”
Snyder believes this was all a deliberate act by Bezos’ newspaper to damage the character of the NFL owner. Multiple reports indicate that Snyder is convinced that all of this is happening because Bezos wants to oust Snyder so he can buy the commander.
It’s very possible that Snyder will sell the Commander in the next year, but it’s obvious that his feelings about Bezos could have a big impact on the process.
