SDSU cheerleader Brianna DeMarais is on the mend

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — In early October, we introduced you to SDSU cheerleader Brianna DeMarais, who was days away from amputating part of her right leg due to blood clots and poor circulation. Today, the 19-year-old is on the mend and is finding support from across the country.

Brianna DeMarais started falling on the sidelines at SDSU football games. Today, she is learning to navigate life without part of her right leg.

“I’m adjusting to all the new things, like with my crutches and wheelchair, getting used to all the different new things,” said 19-year-old Brianna DeMarais.

She is not one to shy away from a challenge.

“We brought her home and we didn’t take that wheelchair out of the closet (laughs),” said Brianna’s father Bob DeMarais.

Bob Demarais, says the support the entire family has received has worked wonders for his daughter.

“I know Brianna is just overwhelmed, but so grateful and it just keeps her motivated,” said Bob DeMarais.

“I’m so thankful to everyone and it’s crazy how much support I’ve gotten and it’s like, yeah,” said Brianna DeMarais.

Pizza Ranch on West 41st Street in Sioux Falls is hosting a fundraiser tonight where 10% of all sales and 100% of all donations go directly to the DeMarais family.

“Of the 100 fundraisers we’ve had this year, I think this one is going to be my favorite,” said Pizza Ranch owner Todd Pharis.

Todd Pharis owns the Pizza Ranch on West 41st Street. He is also a good friend of the DeMarais family and a big fan of USD.

“Even though we may be rivals, we definitely care about each other and that’s what we want to show, and I’ve asked the USD people to wear red today because we’re going to have a lot of blue here,” Pharis said. .

Bob DeMarais says the insurance will cover the cost of a prosthetic leg, but that Brianna will need an athletic prosthetic to finally be able to cheer again.

“We’re going to get her one no matter what, but it’s just something that really takes the pressure off of us and allows her to really focus on getting better,” said Bob DeMarais.

“Get my prosthesis, get merry, yeah,” Brianna DeMarais said.

Brianna’s oldest sister, Kristina, made the trip from North Carolina for Thursday’s fundraiser, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pizza Ranch on West 41st Street in Sioux Falls.
