Robbie Anderson hopes to help the Cardinals, even in the short week

Robbie Anderson just pitched against the Cardinals earlier this month.

On Sunday, with his playing time dwindling with the Carolina Panthers, the wide receiver had a pair of altercations with an assistant coach that led to interim head coach Steve Wilks sending Anderson to the locker room for the duration of the game.

On Monday, Anderson was a Cardinal, and even with a short week and a team that plays the Saints on Thursday night, he hopes to at least play a little bit.

Did Anderson need a fresh start? “I feel like I was meant to be, and it’s not a mistake that I’m here,” he said after the team’s walkthrough Wednesday. And what went wrong in Carolina?

“We didn’t win the Super Bowl,” Anderson said. “That’s why I play this game, to win the Super Bowl.”

The Cardinals have a lot of work to do to get Anderson close to that goal. For now, it’s about getting him ready for the game against the Saints.

“If we do it, it’s going to be very limited and make sure he knows (his plays),” coach Kliff Kingsbury said.

The 6-foot-3 Anderson has top speed and brings an element lost when Hollywood Brown went down with a foot injury in Seattle. (Kingsbury said Brown will be out at least a month.) The Cardinals also return DeAndre Hopkins from suspension.

Rondale Moore, A.J. Green and Greg Dortch are other wideout options.

“I want to be able to master my craft, but this is not a normal week,” Anderson said, “so I’m trying to pick up everything that I’ve been picked to learn and master what I can.

“Whatever they put on my plate, I’ll do my best.”

In Carolina, Anderson had 13 receptions for 206 yards and a touchdown, though he had just five total receptions over the past four games.

The Cardinals sent draft picks — none from the 2023 draft, instead a sixth-round pick in 2024 and a seventh-rounder in 2025 — to get Anderson.

Kingsbury said he and Anderson “talked” about the problems Anderson had on the sidelines in Carolina, and that the Cardinals “feel good” about Anderson as a player and a person. Anderson’s good relationship with wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson — who coached Anderson with the Jets — makes the difference.

“I’m very familiar (with Anderson) in that I’ve only played against him a few times, understand his skill set and what he’s capable of,” quarterback Kyler Murray said. “I’m excited for him too.

“I know through the grapevine and social media and things like that, he hasn’t been very happy or anything for the last couple of years, but I know he can go, so I’m looking forward to it.”
