LONDON – Trevor Lawrence put it succinctly.
The Jaguars’ starting quarterback threw two interceptions Sunday in the team’s fifth straight late-game loss, with both touchdowns coming at critical moments.
“I’ve got to look in the mirror and play better,” Lawrence said after the Jaguars’ 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon at Wembley Stadium.
Lawrence, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, completed 18 of 33 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. He threw a first-quarter touchdown pass to start the Jaguars and hauled in a clutch fourth-quarter touchdown to give them a late one.
But he also threw an interception in the end zone in the second quarter. That was his first interception on Sunday. His second interception ended the Jaguars’ hopes of a comeback.
“Listen: We still have a lot of confidence and a lot of faith in him,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “We’re going to keep growing. We’re going to grow together. I told him to keep his head up, to be confident. I want to put the ball in his hands and just show the confidence that we have, that I have in him and that the team has.
“He knows we need to be better in some situations, but again, those are really good learning opportunities for Trevor.”
Teammates agreed, Travis Etienne Jr. the fullback said: “I was telling Trev, ‘It’s never up to you; it’s a team sport.’
“Football is played with 11 men on the field at that point and no one man is going to be the whole show,” said Etienne, Lawrence’s three seasons at Clemson University. “We have to get 11 out on the field, each one doing their job, and that way we will be better.”
Lawrence has thrown six interceptions this season, including three in the red zone. Two red zone interceptions have come in the end zone: one in the week’s 13-6 loss to the Houston Texans, and another in the end zone on Sunday. Sunday’s first-and-goal came after the Jaguars were leading, 7-0, with 12:48 left in the first quarter and safety Justin Simmons intercepted Lawrence one yard out in the end zone.
“There’s a sense of urgency that we have to be better,” Lawrence said. “It’s like what you talk about: the red zone turnovers we’ve had. We had one last week, we had another one this week, and it’s just points you’re taking off the board.
“We’ve got to do better like that. I think our defense did a great job today of keeping us in the game when we got overwhelmed offensively, but if you look at that possession we had on the goal line, he should have scored, that’s huge. That’s a seven-point swing.”
Lawrence’s second interception came after the Broncos took the lead with 1:43 left. Lawrence forced a first-and-10 at the Jaguars 25 against wide receiver Christian Kirk, who intercepted cornerback K’Waun Williams to preserve the win.
“We had all the confidence in the world out there, and then on the first play I threw behind Christian a little bit, and the nickel made a good play and picked him off,” Lawrence said. “There’s a couple of plays I really want, but you’re not getting them back at this point.
“I have to play better, and I’ll leave it at that. I didn’t play well enough today to win.”
