One of Davis Mills’ biggest cheerleaders is actually the guy taking away his starting job.
Quarterback Kyle Allen will lead the Houston Texans against the Cleveland Browns in Week 13, marking the second straight week the former 2021 third-round pick out of Stanford will sit on the bench behind Allen.
Although the Texans seem content to stick with Allen as the starter for the foreseeable future — to the point of keeping him in the game despite falling 30-0 at halftime to the Miami Dolphins the previous week — the former Texas A&M and Houston Cougar believes in Mills .
“We talked,” Allen told reporters Wednesday. “As I told you, Davis is a super talented player. He has everything. Just because he is young, he is thrust into a difficult situation. It’s a great opportunity for him and he’ll be back on that pitch at some point.”
It remains to be seen if Mills will re-enter the Texans’ lineup for the final six games. As a rookie, the Texans turned to Mills for the final five games after Tyrod Taylor failed to provide a spark after replacing Mills after the rookie started 0-6.
Allen believes Mills, who has a 3-17-1 record with an 84.0 passer rating, is too quality of a signal-caller not to return to the gridiron.
Allen said: “He’s too good a player not to go back there. I think everyone will face some kind of adversity in their career. Sometimes you have to go through that to come out the other side better, and I think he’s definitely going to come out the other side better.”
Mills saw his first NFL action last year in Week 2 at the Browns. Taylor strained his hamstring just before halftime and Mills took over and couldn’t overcome the 31-21 loss.
