Benjamin Russell cheerleader to compete at the state championship on Monday

Benjamin Russell cheerleading will compete to bring home a state title in traditional and game day cheer at the state championships on Monday.

After an excellent season cheering on Benjamin Russell’s best football team in years, the Wildcats cheer squad is taking its talents to Birmingham.

To get to states, Benjamin Russell first had to get through the Super South Regional in Mobile, where the girls placed first in the 6A traditional routine, for the first time ever.

For the uninitiated, traditional routines consist of tumbling, elite stunts and cheering within 2:30 minutes.

In the gameday section, cheerleaders perform more traditional sideline-style cheers, such as band chants, sideline cheers and a fight song.

“I’ve been so very proud of these girls,” coach Sandi Woods said. “They have worked hard. They have been very committed.”

Benjamin Russell’s cheerleading team has a routine at regionals. 3 November 2022.

When the flu ran rampant through the school systems in early November, the Wildcats had several girls compete in regionals due to illness and injuries.

“We’ve had girls working all over the place,” Woods said back in November. “We hope to be at full strength for state. I was extremely proud of our girls for pushing through.”

A cheer season is unlike a regular sports season, so the regional and state competition are the only competitions for the team. At the start of the school year, the squad only cheers for the volleyball team and the Wildcats football team. While the cheerleaders helped the football team to an undefeated home record and helped the volleyball team reach regionals, much of their work is done in empty gyms.

When basketball and wrestling start, the cheerleading team heads out again, in addition to cheering up the school for pep rallies and parades.

For Woods, she believes her team has accomplished a lot throughout the year and can take the success from regionals into the state competition.

“I think we have a good shot,” Woods said. “The girls are excited and we have been working hard in training. We’ve added a little more difficulty to our traditional routines. We have to keep the energy up in our routines on game days.”

The Wildcats begin their game day routine on Monday, Dec. 5, starting at 8:24 p.m.
