TAUNTON – Looks like the B-P cheerleading team will be heading to the national championship competition in February in Orlando, Florida.
The Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School cheerleading squad capped off their successful season by winning the Game Day state championship on Sunday, November 13th hosted by the Massachusetts School Administrators Association at Shrewsbury High School.
And now it looks like the team will have a chance to continue their winning streak at the National High School Cheerleading Championship contest from February 10-12.
B-P superintendent Alexandre Magalhães said he approved the team’s invitation to compete in the national competition to be held at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
“All we need now is for the cheerleading parents to submit permission forms that will allow their daughters to participate,” he said.
B-P athletic director Mark Lebeda said the cheerleaders’ parents raised “wonderful women, and it shows in everything they do”.
B-P defeats 17 teams to win state championship
Head coach Jessica Holst said the Bristol-Plymouth cheerleaders defeated 17 teams in four competitions that involved performing a dance band, situational cheering moves, leadership chants and maneuvering during a fight song. “Game day reflects what cheerleaders do during a real football game,” she said.

Holst said that the band dance portion of the competition required the cheerleaders to perform a dance routine that they would do during a sporting event.
“Situational animation involved an announcer asking the cheerleaders to do offensive or defensive moves that required takedowns,” she said. “The crowd’s cheering chant required the team to do tumbling movements and have the crowd scream back as they performed. The last thing they did was somersaults and acrobatic moves while a band played a fight tune.”
Holst said that the MSAA only allowed highly skilled cheerleaders to participate in these “performance cheerleading” competitions.
Bristol-Plymouth clinches ‘performance cheer’ events
Bristol Plymouth’s Game Day championship followed the team’s first-place wins during the Trojan Invitational at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School on 6 November, the Weymouth Invitational on 23 October and the Mayflower Athletic Conference League championship on 30 October . “They had to be great gymnasts and cheerleaders,” she said. “It’s not very inclusive.”
Holst said performance cheering “is very similar to star cheering”.

“Athletes don’t say words during most of their performance,” she said. “The routine is set to music and sound effects to showcase elite skills.”
Holst said her team wanted to participate in the Game Day competition because “it’s more inclusive”, allowing all cheerleaders to perform.
“They appreciate each of their teammates for the skills and talents they bring to the (competition) mat, regardless of what those skills are,” she said. “I have improved my Game Day athletes’ skills and confidence on and off the mat. They are having fun and developing life skills in problem solving and teamwork. This will last a lifetime for them.”
‘An incredibly challenging sport’
Taunton City Council and Mayor Shaunna O’Connell congratulated the Bristol-Plymouth cheerleaders on 29 November on their successful season, presenting quotes to each teammate. See the article : Best of Week 9 Practice | 11.04.22.

“It takes hours of tireless practice,” she said during the citation ceremony.

B-P Cheerleading co-captain Mya Pereira said the team means “a lot” to her.
“Thanks to all the Bristol-Plymouth cheerleaders,” she said.
“A special shout out to my mom, dad and our coach. We couldn’t have done this without you. We were so lucky to have you. Thank you so much. Nationals are next.”
