The Laurel school board is hoping for some stability in its cheerleading program.
The board on Wednesday named Lori Hites and Jenna Burkes as varsity cheer coaches for the 2022-23 school year. Hites is the school’s assistant athletic director.
The Hites will receive a salary of $1,890 with the Burkes a salary of $1,305.
Alyssa Hunt will remain an assistant coach.
The appointments come after head coach Robin Howells stepped down in November.
Howells was named interim coach on October 12.
Another former coach, Brittany Powell, resigned in September after being hired in April. He replaced Jenn Horodyski, who resigned in February.
A public athletic committee meeting was held on November 21 to discuss the future of the program.
At the meeting, the board discussed naming Hites and Burkes as co-coaches this cheer season, and will look for a new coach for next season.
According to the administration, in order for cheerleaders to compete in competitive cheerleading, they must continue to perform as sideline cheerleaders at basketball games and a wrestling match.
