West Pittston junior cheerleader Raeann Merlino dies after RSV and flu battle

Raeann Merlino, a West Pittston fifth-grader, died after being hospitalized on Thanksgiving Day with a combination of RSV and the flu, those who knew her said. He was 10 years old.

Rae was rushed to CHOP as the disease continued to destroy her vital organs, according to a GoFundMe page posted by the girl’s family. He died on Sunday, December 4th.

According to her obituary, Rae was a student in the Wyoming Area School District, who loved to spin and dance.

“Rae always danced to a unique rhythm,” his obituary reads. “Her love of dancing led her to cheerleading, which became her passion and creativity and strength. Compassion to her core, compassion for animals, especially- hall his canine friend, Gus, was a lot Rae.”

Rae is survived by her parents, Jamie Merlino and Dawn Gazda; brother, Adelio (AJ) Merlino; grandparents, Rosemarie and Edward DeLucca; paternal grandmother, Ann Merlino; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and loved ones.
