The US Grand Prix was surrounded by drama from the start. In addition to the race and all the F1 movie drama, there was another incident that caught the attention of fans around the world.
The problematic tradition of F1 trackside models, known as grid girls, was banned in 2018. F1 managing director of operations, Sean Bratches, said: “This custom does not resonate with our brand values and is clearly at odds with modern social norms”.
However, in Austin, cheerleaders from the NFL football teams, the ‘Dallas Cowboys’ and the ‘Houston Texans’ were present on the grid as they cheered on the riders from the stands. As this practice contradicts the ban on ‘grid girls’, many fans have spoken out. Some against and some in favor of ‘tradition’.
Dallas Cowboys fans were present on Friday during the qualifying session. The Houston team finally arrived on race day Sunday at COTA.
This started a dialogue among F1 fans as they debated the merits and demerits of having a fan base.
