NFL players have been vocal in calling for their employer to move away from artificial turf and into a league-wide switch to natural grass.
On Tuesday, Baker Mayfield made it clear he doesn’t believe what the league is saying about artificial turf being a better product for players to play on.
“I know grass is a lot better for you than lawn, despite the ‘studies,'” Mayfield told reporters. “I would like to see who is doing these studies.
“Gravity is just better for you. It’s more forgiving. You talk to some of the veterans in the league and they train on turf, their knees and joints hurt the next day. To be honest, it’s kind of common sense. If turf doesn’t give way, your feet get stuck in it, compared to grass where you can slip and slide.”
NFLPA President JC Tretter shared a letter over the weekend urging the league to replace all slit-film turf immediately.
“Not only has the NFL refused to mandate this change immediately, but it has also refused to commit to mandating any change away from slot film at all in the future,” Tretter wrote. “The slit film injuries are completely preventable — both the NFL and NFLPA experts agree with the data — and yet the NFL will not protect players from a sub-par surface.”
Aaron Rodgers was also pushing for the move to the grass field this week, but added that he doesn’t expect the NFL to accommodate player requests.
