Braggin’ Rights will lack the enthusiasm, the band and the cheerleaders will not…

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., (WCIA) – Illini Basketball prepares Thursday night for St. Louis to face Mizzou for the annual Braggin’ Rights game.

However, there will be a little less cheer in the stands as both the University of Illinois band and cheerleaders will be absent due to winter weather throughout the Midwest.

Band senior Spencer Walden said he’s glad safety comes first but is looking forward to the performance.

“It’s a bummer if you can’t go support the team,” Walden said. “It’s really exciting to watch this team. I don’t think there’s anything like Braggin’ Rights in the country. From a band standpoint, from a cheer standpoint, from a fan standpoint, just the environment that it has. I used to go a lot as a kid.”

He said the difference in energy is noticeable even without the band in the stands.

The Mizzou band won’t be traveling either.

The Marching Illini will travel to Florida next week to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl Game, where the Illini football team will take on Mississippi State on Jan. 2 in Tampa.
