Cheer’s Gabi Butler gets called out for allegedly lying about…

The cast of the Netflix reality show Cheer, which chronicles the nationally ranked Navarro College cheer squad, is back in the headlines for another controversial reason. After cheerleader Jerry Harris was arrested in 2020 for sex offenses involving minors, cheerleading was embroiled in a blackface scandal, when a photo of an alleged initiation rite was posted on social media this month. Now, Cheer star Gabi Butler has been reported by a teammate for lying about the controversy.

After a photo of Gabi Butler in blackface was posted by an anonymous Twitter account, the cheerleader responded with a statement that explained that the photo was taken in 2018, when she and other freshmen on the team were instructed by seniors on the team to dress in black and paint their faces. She also shared images of other teammates in blackface, saying others, “including some who were also people of color” also agreed to the request. However, fellow Cheer co-star La’Darius Marshall denied being complicit in blackface, tweeting:

No, what we won’t do is throw ‘other people of color’ under the bus. The rest of the minority spoke out against it, I personally talked to you and said it wasn’t a good idea. So no, we don’t all feel the same way, I forgave you for that, but don’t just sit here LYING.

La’Darius Marshall, who had left the crowd in Season 2 of the Netflix bingeable series but still appeared on the show, hit back at Gabi Butler’s claims that newcomers, including Marshall, did what they were told without arguing. He said other people of color had also voiced their concerns, and that he even told Butler it wasn’t a good idea. Marshall also said in another tweet that the situation was reported to Navarro and other authorities, and no action was taken. In his words, the blame should be placed on:

Our coaches, our president, the law enforcement officers, the school board and title 9 bc were all notified of such wrong actions and they did NOTHING. It’s who she should have @’td but she chose a cheap shot trying to make it look like something she wasn’t and I simply corrected her

It certainly isn’t the first time the Cheer stars have seen controversy. Former fan favorite Jerry Harris is currently serving a 12-year sentence in federal prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old during a cheerleading competition and paying a 17-year-old to send him videos and sexually explicit photos via Snapchat. Harris reportedly admitted to other instances of misconduct involving minors, but was only convicted of those two counts due to a plea deal. The situation was addressed in season two of Cheer, with two of Jerry Harris’ accusers speaking out about why they came forward.

It remains to be seen what the blackface situation will mean for Navarro College and Gabi Butler, who People reports signed a WWE contract in November and is set to begin training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
