FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – When Marcus Mariota took the podium for his postgame press conference after the Falcons’ victory over the 49ers on Sunday, he said something that maintains a certain basis in his offensive identity.
He was talking about his 50 rushing yards that went along with his 13-of-14 completion rate on the day. He praised the young quarterbacks the Falcons are currently using: Tyler Allgeier and Caleb Huntley, but also added this note: “Today was one of those days where the defense presented some opportunities for me to run a little bit. change week to week, and we understand that.”
Ultimately, this may be the microcosm of that offense. It takes what the opposing defenses give it.
While the Falcons’ run game has been their calling card in 2022, even within the folds of the run game, there are variables the Falcons look to take advantage of. Mariota’s shuffling ability being one of said bends.
“In this attack, we do a lot of different things,” said Mariota. “So depending on who we play each week, maybe we can pitch, maybe we can execute. I just think we have a lot of versatility that allows us to create advantages.”
For the Falcons’ offense, when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s hard to defend because of the mystery behind the pre-snap moves, alignments, and packages that Arthur Smith deploys. So far, it’s a more competitive (and productive) offense than it was a year ago.
So, six games in, with a . 500 record, the question was asked: is this offense sustainable with teams gathering more information and film on this new look of the Falcons offense?
Falcons quarterback coach Charles London didn’t hesitate to reply that yes, it sure is.
Why? Because of exactly what Mariota said above.
“Whatever way we have to go into victory in the football game? Let’s do it,” said London. “If that means we’ve pitched 20 times this week? Great. If we need to pitch 40 times this week? Great. I think this offense is more than sustainable because I think we’re going to take advantage of what the defense gives us. We’re going to carve out whatever niche we can.” to help us win the football game.”
Until now, it has been like this. And even when that’s not the case, the Falcons’ problems aren’t ones that can’t be solved.
Whatever issues have arisen for the Falcons this year have no basis in culture.
Smith has repeatedly said that being objective after a win is just as important as after a loss. The difference? It’s harder to be objective after a win, especially a good one.
How the Falcons respond to a promising win over the 49ers — how they sustain success — is vital to understanding this culture in Atlanta. That’s why Smith said on Wednesday that this week is very important for the Falcons to find out more about who they are.
“Do we want to see how we responded this week and can we make corrections?” Smith said. “Can we execute the plan? And improve to beat a very tough team on the road.”
Because facing Cincinnati won’t be easy.
They have one of the best quarterback/wide receiver packages in the league. Much like the Falcons, the Bengals are a team that have had their fair share of one-score games this season. Their record can look very different than it does now, no matter how you look at it.
The Falcons that showed up on Sunday against the 49ers should be the same team that will play the Bengals this Sunday: a versatile, physical and sustainable team.
If this is the team that shows up, does that mean the culture is set in Atlanta? Smith said an organization’s culture is something you have to work on every day, but a win against the Bengals on Sunday? This could mean a lot to where this organization currently stands.
“Just because you won a game on Sunday, and it’s hard to win, you have to turn the page, same thing if you lose,” Smith said. “We’ll find out more with how they respond this week. How you handle success is just as important as how you handle any kind of failure as well.”
