Bair: Falcons must have one-goal magic, finish well to prove…

LANDOVER, Md. — The Falcons play a lot of close games, almost exclusively in fact.

They have completed 12 games, nine of which were decided by a score and most of which ended in final possession.

As we all know, the Falcons scratch, claw and fight until the bell rings. Everytime. No exceptions.

Their record on the scorecards, if we can take this boxing analogy one step further, hasn’t been hugely decisive.

The Falcons are 4-5 in one-scored games, falling below even in those situations after Sunday’s 19-13 loss at Washington. The Falcons were two yards from the goal line on a valiant comeback attempt, but never crossed it.

Marcus Mariota’s interception, hit and then picked in the end zone, essentially sealed an unwanted and possibly crucial outcome for the grand scheme. The Commanders now sit above them in the conference standings, just outside the playoff picture, with a tiebreaker in hand.

In conference and NFC South standings likely decided by the tightest of margins, losses like this hurt. It’s fair to say the Falcons could and perhaps should have completed that comeback, but ultimately fell short in a desperately needed game.

It happens too often for the Falcons to pile on the wins and increase late in the season, creating the possibility that they will regret some of those results after the new year.

“We’re a good team, but to be a great team, we have to finish,” said rookie running back Tyler Allgeier, wiser than ever. “You have good teams everywhere, but those who finish games end up ahead. All our efforts are there. We ended up just short this time.”

Just short. As they were against New Orleans and the L.A. Rams and Chargers, and against Tampa Bay. The Falcons had a chance to win each of those — that overtime home win over Carolina sure could have gone the other way — and failed.

Narrow losses didn’t happen a year ago, when the Falcons were 7-2 in single-scoring games. That’s how last year’s unit won all of their matches, constantly knocking out one or suffering a lopsided loss.

This year’s team is undoubtedly better and is in almost every game. Smarter footballers than me often say that the results of a score don’t travel from year to year. I believe that’s true, even with players who completely buy into Arthur Smith’s relentless, never-ending mentality. There’s just too much randomness in these close matches to assume that they will consistently continue to find roses.

This year’s group has some real strengths and some pronounced weaknesses, but still plays hard until the end. They did it here at FedEx Field, but in the end they couldn’t make one that will sting.

“I can’t lie and say it’s not a missed opportunity because it is, but we still have life,” defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said. “We have goals ahead of us that we can achieve. We were happy with our chances to get into this game, until the end. For [this game] to go the way it did is definitely disappointing, but we ‘I have to get back to work. We can’t sit here and sulk for too long.

“It’s one of those losses where you want to get back on the pitch quickly. We’re going to be delighted to play next week.”

They will enter the Week 13 game against Pittsburgh rightly believing, as Jarrett said, that they have life. Yeah. In the playoff picture.

I wasn’t going to mention the playoffs in this column and I recommend that you refrain from doing so. This team needs to be more consistent and stack up the wins, would read my message for you, before being considered a true playoff contender.

Then Tampa Bay went to lose to Cleveland in overtime shortly after the Falcons fell, keeping the NFC South standings super compact. How can I say don’t think about the playoffs when they’re half a game away with five to go?

So let’s say they’re on the hunt, in a division ready to be taken. However, they will only win if they can start racking up wins and finishing the close games you know they are about to fall. Otherwise, they will continue to grow closer.

“We have the ability. We’ve proven it,” left tackle Jake Matthews said. “We have to control what we can and when our opportunities arise we have to make plays. It ultimately comes down to execution. We didn’t execute well enough today, until the very end. We We had our shot and the result could’ve gone differently and we’d have a very different conversation right now.”

Yeah. We would be talking about the first-place Falcons controlling their own destiny on the stretch. Instead, we’re talking about needing more help and a solid finish to achieve their goals.

“We have five games left and we have to do our best,” Jarrett said. “We put ourselves in this position. It’s up to us to get out of it.”
