Fort Dorchester and Summerville snatched the two most prestigious football awards presented by Region 7-AAAAA.
Summerville running back Marquez Spells was named the 2022 Region 7-AAAAA Football Player of the Year. The senior rushed for more than 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns this fall, adding more than 250 receiving yards and a TD catch. With Spells at the helm, Summerville had an 11-3 season and advanced to the 5A Lower State championship round of the playoffs.
Fort Dorchester’s Steve LaPrad was named Region Coach of the Year. With LaPrad at the helm, the Patriots advanced to the state championship game before ending the season with an 11-4 record and as runners-up to the 5A States.
The LaPrad Patriots defeated their regional opponents this season to win the regional soccer championship. The team’s only losses were to nationally ranked opponents, while the only state losses were to Irmo and Dutch Fork, who defeated Fort Dorchester in the state title game.
Several other players from the Summerville area made up the 2022 Region 7-AAAAA Football All-Region team.
Also on the list are Michael Jenkins (defensive back), Keith Elmore Jr. (defensive back), Yannick Smith (receiver), Josh Matusik (defensive end), Campbell McCurry (quarterback), Steve Simpkins Jr. (linebacker), and Reginald Pinckney (offensive lineman).
Ashley Ridge landed seven players on the team, Christian Garland (linebacker), Alex Ledford (linebacker), TJ Wilson (linebacker), Jacob McDaniels (guard), Xavier Proctor-Floyd (quarterback), Derrick Salley (receiver), and Nik Jefferson (defensive Move).
West Ashley’s Terry Grant (linebacker), Tyler Point (defensive back), Brandon Vick (offensive lineman), DaLon Ramsey (offensive lineman), Kevin Brown (running back) and Chris Dolloff (defensive back), and Ze’me Felder-Shuler von Rounding out the team are Stall (receiver), Hayden Gregory (offensive lineman) and Emanuel Foster (running back).
Ashley Ridge and Summerville received the region’s top two awards for competitive cheerleading.
Summerville Senior Grace Cook is the 2022 Cheerleader of the Year in the region. Brodi Bellush and Baylee Kemble also represent the Green Wave on the all-region team.
Ashley Ridge’s Emilee Fidler is the 2022 Region Coach of the Year for Cheerleading. Her all-region team includes AR cheerleaders Lily Holl, Elizabeth Davenport, Bella Dawson and Alexa Barkasy.
Fort Dorchester’s Keira Gaffney, Reagan Yost and Courtney Cole, and West Ashley’s Riley Alexander and Emma Steinmeyer were also named to the all-region team.
