Mississippi State fans honor Mike Leach, Zach Arnett praises team’s preparation on beach day.

Mississippi State enjoyed a beach day in Tampa, Florida before the Reliaquest Bowl and Bulldogs fans unveiled the latest tribute to Mike Leach.

Wearing Leach’s “STATE” tops, they paid tribute to the coach who died before the bowl game after wearing a sweatshirt several times during games. Many bowl teams have honored Leach with helmet stickers, or coaches wearing t-shirts or other “STATE” shirts on the sidelines.

At the pep rally, coach Zach Arnett said the Bulldogs are enjoying the first-round experience and now it’s their job to keep up their sales pitch and put a quality product on the field Monday when they face Illinois.

Arnett said his message to the team, especially the seniors, was that he couldn’t thank them enough, or be proud of the way they worked, or the success they enjoyed.

“Obviously it was a big deal on Thanksgiving,” he said. “… We’re excited for this team to reunite and bond and play Illinois football.”
