College football season is in full swing. But Montclair was home to its own signature game last month when the Cobras youth football program hosted the Passaic County Cougars in the first Turkey Bowl, which is expected to become an annual event.
The Cobras defeated the Cougars 26-0.
“The purpose of hosting the tournament was to create a fun atmosphere to honor the kids and families who support our organization,” said Wil Young, president of the nonprofit Montclair Cobras Junior Football and Cheerleading Program. “It was a great event. His parents and our Cobra loyalists received him well.”
The Cobras organization, which has been around for 53 years, provides “an outlet for boys and girls (ages 7-13) who want to compete at the highest level of competition in both full-contact football and cheerleading in North Jersey.” a true mission statement.
Teams, categorized by age, compete in the Garden State American Youth Football Conference, which is an unlimited youth football league. In addition to nurturing soccer and cheerleading skills, the Cobras emphasize teamwork, discipline and education.
“We decided to have a Turkey Bowl at the end of the year with the youngest Cobras,” Young said. “Our opponent, the Passaic County Cougars, offered a challenge and the bowl was born.”
Young especially thanked the coaches and mentors who worked with the young people. “We couldn’t have had a better, more dedicated group,” he said. “We are all volunteers who understand the importance of community service.”
Along with Tony Dorsett and Marcus Allen, Woodson is one of three players to win the Heisman, a college national championship and a Super Bowl.
