NY cheerleader, 16, fatally stabbed by a rival; teenage girl plead guilty

A New York teenager admitted to stabbing a rival cheerleader after a parade.

The Journal News reports that a 15-year-old girl, who was not named because of her age, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree manslaughter in the death of Kayla Green. According to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, the defendant will serve 3 to 9 years in a state juvenile detention center.

Green, 16, was stabbed in the stomach on April 8, 2022 during a large brawl after a parade honoring the Mount Vernon High School boys basketball team for its state championship and undefeated season. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Green was an honor roll student at Mount Vernon and captain of the junior varsity cheerleading squad, according to the Journal News. Defendant was a member of an independent cheer club that Green had previously been with.

The New York Post reports that cell phone videos showed the girl flashing a knife and swinging in a large group of girls near the end of the parade. Another girl was stabbed during the incident.

According to the Hudson Valley Post, charges in Tuesday’s plea for the alleged second stabbing were dismissed because of the defendant’s age and under New York state law.

“Today, the defendant has accepted responsibility for ending Kayla Green’s life and now faces the consequences of this tragic and devastating incident,” said Westchester D.A. Mimi Rocah said in a statement Tuesday. “We hope that the families of all those affected by this senseless violence can begin the journey to healing. My office will continue to support them in any way we can.

Sentencing is set for January 24, 2023.
